Neruda’s 10th Anniversary mixes local talent with Internationally Acclaimed Award Winners
April 29, 2011 (Waterloo Region) 2011 marks the 10th Anniversary of Neruda Productions. The company has grown from humble roots — founder Isabel Cisterna self-producing a single show, Chilean playwright Ariel Dorfman’s Death and the Maiden, in 2001 — into a company that presents International World Music Super-Groups like Quilapayun and Inti-Illimani Histórico. A Neruda season now encompasses over half a dozen concerts, a summer festival and other events and programs. This year will prove to be another dynamic and vibrant year for our concerts and community events, including: Café Intimo | Deseo : Words, Whispers & Desires, Kites of Joy & Freedom Festival, Show the World: Latin Jazz Festival with Juno award winner ALEX CUBA, and First Dance A Queer Dance Theatre Performance.

With workshops, vendors and many talented local and international performers, the Kite Festival is a great way to meet new friends and (hopefully) soak up some sun. First Dance A Queer Dance Theatre Performance July 29, 2011 8:00pm, July 30, 2011 8:00pm | The Button Factory, 25 Regina St. S. Waterloo $20 Advance | $25 Door First Dance is a new play from Burlington’s Tottering Biped Theatre company. Co-created by Trevor Copp
and Jeff Fox, and developed by Pat the Dog Playwright Centre, the play explores issues of power buried in the traditions of modern dance. Be prepared for the finesse of champion ballroom dancers partnered with the frictions of the politics of modern love. The play will be in the middle of a multi-city tour.
Trevor, a gay man, is getting married. His friend and Ballroom dance partner Jeff is helping him devise the first dance. It is three months after gay marriage becomes legal in Canada, and they set about creating a dance for a ritual that has no history. We are looking forward to the fall with our continuing Concert Series Show the World, including more world music, jazz performances and Juno Award winner K'NAAN! Over the past ten years, Neruda Productions has been striving to build bridges between communities in Waterloo Region with music, dance, drama, and visual arts from around the world.
