Charanga Habanera: High Energy Cuban Dance Rhythms
Legendary timba player, David Calzado’s formed Charanga Habanera in 1998 and has guided the band through several successful reincarnations. At the heart of Calzado’s 16-piece orchestra are driving rhythms and a six-member chorus line of Adonis-like singer-dancers who provide all the interactive and experiential energy that give Cuban timba its reputation as the dance craze sweeping the Latin world.
Solo artist, Yulien Oveido, is performing as a special guest on the orchestra’s current tour. Oveido has performed and recorded with several Cuban heavy weights, including the Afro Cuban Allstars, Ruben Gonzales and with Maraca on their CD, Havana Calling.
Charanga Habanera’s 2015 tour includes performances in Canada, Mexico, Italy and Peru where they will play music from their latest album Se Sufra Pero Se Goza and other favorites.
Charanga Habanera have toured extensively performing throughout North and South America, Europe, Japan and Africa. The band has also been nominated for numerous awards including a 2003 Latin Grammy for their album Live in the U.S.A. and 2005 Orgullosamente Latino awards in three categories - best video, best album, and best group.
