The Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra or VICO represents the mandate and spirit of Vancouver's Sound of Dragon Festival and, as a co-presenter, is credited with garnering rave reviews for the inaugural Sound of Dragon Music Festival. The Orchestra consists of several smaller groups including the VICO small ensemble, the Cloud Bell Ensemble and the Orchid Ensemble. LISTEN
VICO is a professional orchestra devoted specifically to performing new intercultural music on a grand scale. Members combine training in the Western or European classical tradition, and musical traditions from around the world including Asian, African, East Indian and Middle Eastern, among others. VICO’s mission is to create a new musical art form, one in which all of Canada’s resident cultures can take part. Through composition, performance and educational outreach, VICO fosters the creation of musical works that both fuse and transcend cultural traditions.
VICO has commissioned and performed over 40 new intercultural works by ground-breaking Canadian composers. It has also collaborated to perform at many of Vancouver’s world and new music events, including the Sacred Music Festival, the Chutzpah! Festival, the Canadian Memorial Church and Centre for Peace, Vancouver Pro Musica, Laudate Singers, Vancouver Community College School of Music, the NOW Orchestra, the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, UBC School of Music, and Capilano University. In 2012, VICO was honoured with a City of Vancouver award for Cultural Harmony.
