2023 Sneak Peek

February 3, 2023

Neruda Arts team has a great lineup of events, workshops, concerts, theatre performances and more happening in 2023! Many of our events are FREE!

2023 starts the year with THEATRE FOR EARLY YEARS – A workshop to introduce children to theatre, in partnership with Cosmic Fishing.

In February Neruda Arts is partnering with Flush Ink productions and MT Space on project "YEA" YOUTH EMERGING into the ARTS. Geared toward immigrant youths ages 18 – 27, this is an introduction to the arts, and the arts to them.   This project will have three parts – writing a story into a monologue, how to perform the piece, and the filming of the piece, including uploading to social media to help jump start their careers in the arts.

SHE CREATES (March 8 – 26th) is a month-long of celebration of women in the arts. There will be live performances in theatre and music, art exhibits/installations and a silent protest in support of the women of Iran. Events will be presented throughout the Waterloo Region including at our studio in St. Jacobs, at the Kitchener Farmer's Market, in Waterloo behind the Perimeter Institute and at Conestoga Public School. (Read more on She Creates in a separate post!)

March will also kick off our STUDIO CONCERT SERIES in our St Jacobs studio. These in-studio concerts will be intimate experiences celebrating a diverse selection of multi-cultural music presented in our own studio. The individual concerts will be presented throughout the year – excluding July and September.

Our first VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION of 2023 will also be held in March when we introduce you to eight female, local and international visual artists throughout the month, in the gallery in our Studio in St. Jacobs. These amazing artists represent a myriad of cultures, where their visions and imaginings are born of diverse and interesting experiences. (More details to come!) A new exhibition will be presented every bi-monthly.

INTERACTIVE WORKSHOPS & CLASSES will return this spring and continue throughout the year in our Studio. These include art, dance, language, capoeira and more.

During April and May watch for the MAGNIFICENT CARAVANA EXTRAVAGANZA when our mobile Peace Stage will arrive in eight underserved communities in the Waterloo Region. It's a day of fun for children of all ages, presenting three different kinds of performances.

CUBA/CANADA CONNECTION (April & September)  Danza–Teatro Retazos (Cuba) has invited Neruda Arts and Flush Ink Productions to Havana to be part of their street festival in April. In the following September, the hope its to bring Danza Teatro Retazos here to be part of MT Space's International Theatre Festival, IMPACT 23.

FEEL THE MUSIC (July 13) – Concert for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Opening Kultrún at Neruda Studio. This beloved concert opens Kultrún World Music Festival. Designed for the deaf and hard of hearing, we have constructed 10 vibrotactile chairs that transfer the sound of the band into vibrations through the chair. Each instrument has its own specific vibration. After the band goes through each instrument, with an ASL interpreter explaining to the participants what they are 'feeling', the band will play a concert for them. For so long, the deaf community has been left on the side-lines of music. Now, they can participate. The look on the faces of the participants is worth gold. The chairs will also be available during the festivals.

KULTRÚN WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL (July 13 – 16) - is our signature event, is a free, outdoor, 3-day festival of world music by almost exclusively Canadian musicians celebrating their culture. Enjoy concerts, vendors and activities in the baseball diamond outfield along the Conestogo River in St. Jacobs.

ALL THAT WORLDLY JAZZ FESTIVAL (Sept. 16 & 17) celebrating various flavours of jazz through different cultural backgrounds in more intimate venues in St. Jacobs, as well as our main Stage, along the river. Free.

This is just a peek at what's to come in 2023. For details, watch our website, follow us on our social media and eventbrite, and subscribe to our newsletter.
