SHE PERFORMS

March 23, 2024

What is Neruda Arts best known for? Music! We would be remiss not to celebrate the singer/songwriters of the female persuasion. Featuring Johanna Daze - singer, songwriter, musician. Johanna is an introverted artist whose dreaming leads to the occasional poem. This old soul, yet wild child queer feminist who loves animals.

Tabita

Johanna Daze

Kitchener, Ontario's Johanna Daze thrilled audiences with her powerhouse vocals as the front-person for the blues-inspired band SoulDrive, performing original songs written by the group.  Acclaimed by the Waterloo Record as "a stage dynamo with high-octane vocals", Daze's evolving vocal prowess distinguishes her as a prominent emerging voice in the indie music community.

Tabiba

Tabiba means female doctor or healer in Arabic. Tabiba is a brand new multi-generational Arab women’s drum and vocal ensemble made up of world music artists Leen Hamo (Syria/Canada), Maryem Hassan Tollar (Egypt/Canada), Roula Said (Palestine/Canada), and Tara Moneka (Iraq/Canada). Tabiba mixes the colours of their voices, traditions and inspirations to make music medicine.

Leen hails from Aleppo where she began studies in voice and violin at the age of 10. Since her arrival in Toronto in 2017, she has sung in the Canadian Arab Orchestra and the Arabic-Flamenco trio Diar. She is currently co-leader of the modern Arabic pop duo, Kazdoura releasing their first EP “Wain” this August.

Maryem has has sung lead for platinum-selling artist Jesse Cook, was the vocalist on the theme music for CBC Television’s Little Mosque on the Prairie and was the vocalist on “Mayya Mayya” from the Bollywood blockbuster Guru. She has earned Juno nominations with the groups Maza Mezé and Turkwaz, and currently leads her own ensemble, Al Qahwa.

Roula Said is a singer, dancer, poet and actor who earned a Juno nomination with her band Nomadica, creates music for theatre and dance, and is currently working on an original song cycle from her sufi-inspired poetry.

Tara was a child singing sensation in her native Baghdad thanks to her appearance on the Middle Eastern TV show The Voice and is now based in Toronto and fronting her own all-women superstar band, Dijlah which is taking the town by storm!
